Night Worker Assessments
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, all night workers must be offered an initial and annual health assessment. A night worker is defined as anyone who regularly works more than three hours between 11:00pm and 6:00am.
Why Are Night Worker Assessments Important?
Night shift work can impact health over time, particularly sleep patterns, mental wellbeing, and long-term physical health. These assessments help ensure that employees are medically fit to work night shifts and that their health is not being adversely affected.
What’s Involved?
The assessment typically involves a confidential health questionnaire, which is reviewed by an experienced Occupational Health Nurse or Doctor who understands the nature of your business and the specific demands of the role.
Following the review, a fitness for night work report will be provided to the employee’s manager, with appropriate recommendations where necessary.
Offering regular night worker assessments helps employers meet their legal obligations, supports employee wellbeing, and promotes a safe and healthy working environment.
